Welcome to the World Jersey Cattle Bureau

Jersey Canada was established in 1901. There are approximately 30,000 to 35,000 registered Jerseys in the current Canadian population.
In recent years the breed has been “riding a high” with enormous growth in activity levels as evidenced by the following statistics:

  • Jersey Canada memberships topped the 900 mark in 2007 and are at their highest level since 1968, 39 years earlier!!!
  • Between 2001 and 2007 membership totals grew by 28%!!
  • In 2007 registrations were at the highest level since 2002 and the third highest level in the latest 15 years! Between 2003 and 2007 registrations grew by over 10%!
  • 2007 transfer of ownership levels were at the best level since 2000 and were 37.6% higher than in 2004!
  • Between 2001 and 2007 the number of milk-recorded dairy herds in Canada with a Jersey presence grew from 607 to 1,004-this is an increase of 65% in six years! This means that some Jerseys are found on 10% of the dairy farms in Canada that are involved in milk-recording!
  • Between 2004 and 2007 the association registered over 500 new herd prefixes!
  • In recent years 6500 to over 7,000 new animals per annum have been registered.

Canada has been a power-house exporter of Jersey genetics because of the well-known and well-respected balanced breeding philosophy practiced within the country. Canadian cattle are renowned for their strong type and longevity matched with attractive levels of productivity. The latest national average for production shows levels over 6,300 kilograms of milk, 300 kilograms of fat and 235 kilograms of protein.

Jersey Canada is heavily involved in genetic improvement, domestic and international marketing, youth work and production of a large number of educational and marketing materials in print and electronic and video formats!
We are pleased to play our part in the international explosion in demand for Jersey genetics that has taken place in the first decade of the 21st century!

Jersey Canada’s efforts will be directed by a solid Strategic Plan entitled “Jersey Rising” over the final years of this decade!
